Critique 3

 Intentional Play

My three materials are soft sculpture, plaster, and chicken wire. For the past two weeks I've been experimenting with all of them, but mainly plaster and chicken wire since I've already done a lot of soft sculpture.

__________________________________________________________________________

For this piece, I molded my foot and then casted it in plaster and attached hooks so I could hang it from the chain. I want to continue working on this piece and add more limbs to it. Perhaps some arms and hands (I made some hands but both broke in the mold.)

For this piece I started out by making a chicken wire form of a meat shape (half a cow). I then used burlap and other fabrics and different colored dyed plasters. I have a lot more to do to it but just recently had surgery and had to take a break from it.

Which is why I made this, because I can do it sitting down. Plus I've been wanting to make a lot of them and have them all hanging together as a series, called Innards and Remains.

I also tried making some udders with fabric I want to make a lot of them all different sizes on the wall. I need to work more on it to make it more udder like. Free the nipples!

  2. I think the materials you choose are really successful communications of your explorations! I think the hanging and chains is a really interesting way of displaying some of your ideas and you should continue to explore that and see if there are even more ways to portray that as well.

  3. Hi Kara! I am loving the process of your sculptures, it really make me feel I am inside a human slaughter. Definitely keep working on more body parts with plaster. In a way I see two concepts in your work and the "Human Slaughter" is becoming very powerful, keep working hard!!!! I hope everything is ok with your surgery, get well soon :)

  4. I really love the materials and how they all coexist. My favorite are the loom experimenst because I feel like the texture of them as well as that color brings the eyes attention to many different areas of the piece.

  5. Those chains and limbs have a punch effect, well done!and yes, the more the better. They read very well with no further explanation needed. As for the half cow, love the scale, good choice of material/color, it already has a good look going. Keep in mind the message you want to convey with them. I want to see all that in a gallery girl!
    Feel better soon!

  6. Hey Cara! Your process and work is amazing! I love that you are very determined and consistent in your art and ideas. Your work definitively has unification and all these pieces can work as a series. Your message is evident and I like the title of Innards and Remains. I also have a piece in mind that involves casting my feet lol. Keep the good work and get better! I wish you a great recovery ;)

  7. Hey girl, love that so much work is being made. Your plaster meat piece really appealing to look at and can really have a viceral effect when finished. I would pay attention to the communicative qualities of the actual materials you are using and see mabey what other things can be added or played with who's materiality more directly communicates the things you are working towards. For example using using fabric or pantihose that is feminine or typically used for dance costumes, when used in a sculpture, speaks differently than mabey the material that butcher aprons are made off etc..
Look at Clemens krauss "self portrait". He made a human rug really similar to yours. (Completely different concept) but still.

  8. Hi Kara,
    Hi guys,
    Nice to see everybody commenting.
I think the most successfully poetic work is the one with the chains. By replacing the animal with yourself you create an openness for dialogue and interpretation that is no longer limiting. I feel it's an interesting new direction for you. One that will be sure to yield interesting results. The work is by nature a form of self-portrait. As artists, this is where we go when we need to re-evaluate. The self portrait can help to clarify and provide cathartic direction when we need it.
    Congrats kid.
